Ambleside and Snow. Perfect!

January 26, 2013

Well it took a while this Winter but snow arrived in the Lake District at last.

We had had what can only be described as “normal” snow during the week, but when you wake up and see this ……

Lots of snow

Lots of snow

You know you have to get out and about. I was in two minds whether to walk down to the village to see what road conditions were like, having followed the problems folk had had travelling the previous evening on Twitter.  However as it was very obvious I wasn’t  going to be driving anywhere today I decided to head up hill and do a circuit back round to Ambleside.

Passing yet another snowy bench I went up the path to Wansfell.

Had debated about walking up to the Kirkstone  Pass Inn and there was a little bit  of sun hitting the fells in that direction and blue sky appearing.

However I stuck with my plan of wandering along the coffin route and into Ambleside . Looking towards Grasmere and Rydal.

I love it when no one else has walked in the snow before you. It was especially handy today though. No footprints meant no one around to watch me clamber over various gates as the snow piled up meant I couldn’t push them open!

Not a soul up and about yet.

Look what everyone was missing.

By now it was brightening up. The weatherman had said it would thaw pretty quickly and judging by the large dollops of snow which were pelting down from the trees on to me he could well be right.

The coffin route comes out at Blue Hill Woods and as I walked into the village through Low Fold carpark the sun came out.

There were a few randomly parked cars but the road was open and a few cars about.

The main road was passable, but the side roads were a bit more snowy.

Still  not very many people around.

Not many shops open either although most did open later. Two people I spoke to had actually slept in their shops as they hadn’t been able to get home the night before.

Had contemplated jumping on a bus to somewhere but as I hadn’t seen a single one decided against it.

Most of the shops in the Market Place were open but the Post Office wasn’t.

So back up the hill. Had to feel sorry for this chap who was very obviously trying to make his way to a Holiday home. Why does it always snow on change over day?

Through Stockghyll Falls next which nearly turned out to be a bad decision. Not only was snow melting fast and dripping from the trees, but the sheer weight of the snow was making branches snap off. Close one! just as I was looking at the falls.

Falling Branches

Safely back out on to the lane and heading uphill again. The sun was now shining and children were out sledging. Nearly home and time to try and clear some snow from the path!.

And just in case anyone wondered. I did dangle a tape measure over the snow and here was the result.

19cms. Enough snow for anyone!. Apparently according to tonights weather forecast it is going to melt so fast we are on flood alert. British Weather got to love it!.

Thanks for those beautiful pictures, wish I was there. I love the snow but not even a flake here on the coast 😦

    • Thanks for taking the time to read my blog and comment. Rain just started here as forecast. Glad I made the most of the day :-).

  2. Look so lovely Chris. We went to Bowness yesterday and it had all gone. Only had a teeny bit in Carnforth since Xmas – must be only place in Uk to escape it!

    • Thanks. Yes as usual lots of little micro climates in the Lake District. The snow went as quickly as it came which was quite a relief really. It’s surprising how many big branches have come down in the area. The road from Ambleside to Grasmere has quite a few walls knocked down by falling branches.
