Launchy Ghyll and Castlerigg stone circle

February 13, 2010

Yesterday was a bit of a dull day however a walk was needed so decided to go to Cockermouth first to see how things were progressing after the floods. Many of the businesses have set up in the auction mart while their shops dry out. The main street was pretty desolate but up by Sainsburys and the mart things were a bit livelier. Barclays had set up in a temporary portacabin. We walked by the river and many of the houses were boarded up or had drying out equipment set up in them. The river bank was completely destroyed at some points with trees sticking out vertically. Anyway we put a bit of money back into the local economy and headed back towards home.

Decided to walk up Launchy Ghyll which had numerous signs displayed warning no Ghyll scrambling or ice climbing after the recent cold snap.

There was still a little bit of ice underfoot but only in shaded patches. A lot of trees had been cleared by the Forestry Commission so the views down Thirlmere and across to Helvellyn were really clear.

One of my favourite things when out walking is watching the local Herdwick sheep, Found a friend who was watching me very carefully.

Who is following who?

When you get to the top of Launchy Ghyll you come across this stone balancing on the hillside, if you are with someone then you have to try and shake hands through the narrow gap at the bottom.

After walking round the Falls, it was off to Castlerigg stone circle just in case the sunset was good. Guess what? It wasn’t however it’s not often there is nobody there so that was a result.

Quite an atmospheric sky though and a nice end to the day.
