The heaviest snow for a decade

December 27, 2009

Christmas 2009 has proved to be a very interesting experience indeed. Snow started falling at 2.30pm on the 19th December the snow started, and as I sit here on the 27th December we are just beginning to see a possibility of getting out after being trapped for over a week. Temperatures went down to -8 at night and didn’t rise above freezing for many days. Roads were impassable and very few were gritted. I managed to get a bus on 23d when they started running again and even they were skidding all over the road, very scary. On the positive side I have never seen such a winter wonderland in the Lake District, the trees were literally coated with snow and it was a real Christmas delight if you didn’t need to get anywhere. This is a selection of photos from Ambleside, Grasmere and the roads round Kendal.
